Hello from beautiful Acapulco,
Not all is perfect down here in the land of sun, cervezas and tacos, however. Slowly, backwards American culture creeps into Mexico. I was very unhappy to see that my Starbucks has just installed “recycle bins”.
To translate, from left to right it says, “Plastic”, “Glass and Aluminum”, “Paper” and “Organic”. Am I the only one who finds these types of things totally confusing? For example, in which one does gum go? Or how about a plastic cup half full of organic liquids?
Well, in this particular case it doesn't really matter because I guarantee you that they just dump it all into the garbage. Mexico has never had any sort of recycling services… and that's a good thing by the way.
I had a Canadian family member come down once and ask where he puts his plastic disposables for recycling. “They don't do that here,” I said. He responded, “That's terrible!”
Is it? Penn and Teller did a great job on their program “Bullshit” deconstructing the recycling myth:
The free market (if we were to ever allow it to exist) tells us whether recycling makes economic sense or not. If it makes economic sense then entrepreneurs would start up services going door to door paying you for your “recyclables”. Since this doesn't make economic sense, governments subsidize this “service” by taking your money and then spending it to collect your recyclables. The pure fact that it has to be subsidized shows it is not economically viable… and if it isn't economically viable then it makes no sense to do. It means that it takes more resources to recycle than not to recycle. So by recycling you are actually destroying valuable resources.

Listening to uninformed and brainwashed Americans hoot and holler about recycling further instills in my mind something that I keep thinking more about the older I get. We are all, for the most part, just chimpanzees with pants.
Most people have no principles by which they live and are almost purely reactionary, reacting to whatever social meme happens to make sense to their dull, monkey minds. Yes, recycling good! Me like recycling!
But, it's not economic, therefore it's destroying assets, you respond. They just look back with a dim stare, confused. Then repeat, recycling good! Me like recycling!
In many ways people are just like this hilarious accidental comedy scene from the movie Ark II.
A bit less running, a little more thinking, people. Please.
PDAC & CAFAYATE
I'm enjoying my last week on the beach before returning to Toronto where I'll be speaking at the PDAC next Sunday (March 4th) from 1:45pm to 2:10pm in room 801. I'll be speaking at the “Investor's Exchange” and that part of the conference is free. You can register onsite. Drop by and say hi if you will be at the PDAC. For those that don't know, the PDAC is the wildest mining conference on the planet. Literally everyone who has anything to do with mining from anywhere in the world descends on Toronto for this 4 day conference. Geologists who have been in the bush for months can be spotted in downtown Toronto with some money in their pocket and looking for a good time. It is a site to behold and the amount of “hospitality suites” and parties thrown is epic.
From the PDAC I'll be heading straight to Cafayate from March 9th to 23rd for the grape harvest celebration activities. Apparently Cafayate was a stop on the US TV show “The Amazing Race”. Watch or DVR the show to see how beautiful this little corner of the world is, and see how hard it is to get there. It's worth the effort, as you step back in time. Show time: 7PM Central this Sunday after 60 Minutes.
