Political Hypocrisy Is Just Fine By Me

Another politicians wants to put you in jail for partaking in the same hobby he does. This week from the Raw Story:

A Republican lawmaker in New York who has a record of voting against medical marijuana legalization has been arrested and charged with possession of marijuana.

State police said that a suspicious odor was noticed in Assemblyman Steve Katz’s vehicle when they pulled him over for driving around 80 mph in a 75 mph zone at around 10 a.m. Thursday morning.

“After noting the odor of marijuana, a New York State Trooper found Katz in possession of a small bag of marijuana,” a statement from state police said, according to the Times Union.

Katz was given an appearance ticket for having less than 25 grams and is scheduled to appear in Coeymans Town Court on March 8. He also faces charges for speeding.

Last year, the assemblyman voted against a bill that would have legalized medical marijuana in New York.

What is it about New York politicians? Remember a few years ago former Governor Eliot Spitzer resigned when it came to light he had spend thousands of dollars on prostitution…the same activity he prosecuted people for during his years as attorney general for the state of New York.

It's not just the hypocrisy. It is that these life-destroying hypocrites are living proof that the prejudices they enforce at gunpoint (also known as "laws") are clearly just that: prejudices. Victimless crimes aren't only victimless. They also aren't crimes. These laws are just the political class pandering to the knee-jerk hatred of certain activities by a block of moralizing voters.

These men live anarchy in their own lives. They do as they wish as long as it doesn't harm the person or property of another. They use banned plants. They pay women for sex with cash instead of dinner or houses.

It is when they turn to the public realm that they exercise the anti-social tendencies that led them to political life. In the public realm, they steal money under threat of kidnapping (taxation)…they direct personal behavior at gunpoint. It's in the public realm that they put out hits on entire nations.

It turns out, however, that society really is much better off when we all are free to get high and pay for sex than when we sanctify gun-backed morality, theft and murder.

So I'm not mad at these politicians for being hypocrites. I'm all for them getting high and slipping money to their sex partners. I just wish they'd stop pointing guns at the rest of us.

US Government to Decide How Much is Enough for Your Retirement

Jeff Berwick on the US government’s monopoly on your retirement.

“Welcome to the new US.  Socialism always has the same predictable process.  Once the government collectivizes a sector then the politicos and bureaucrats get to work on "improving the system".  In a private enterprise, that'd mean offering more to your customers for a cheaper price.  In government, it is always the opposite, finding ways to reduce benefits for their "customers".

This is why Obamacare is and will be a disaster to anyone interested in having quality medical care and choice in the US.  Once the government uses its force to gain a monopoly on a sector like medical care then all of a sudden it now becomes everyone else's business what you do with your own body.  You smoke?  You should be stopped!  Don't wear a seatbelt?  You should be fined.  Why?  Because we are all paying for each other's medical care and so it now becomes everyone else's business what you do with your health because it could potentially cost them more money. ”

Silver Premiums, Demand & Shortages

Jeff Berwick on the current state of silver.

"Back in 2008, silver fell from over $20 per ounce down to below $10. This was a stomach-turning experience for those who had begun investing heavily in the metal.

I heard reports of bullion dealers in the US who simply were not selling Monster Boxes of Silver Eagles. Physical metal was hard to find in spite of the price collapse.

That nadir didn't last for long as silver obviously rebounded magnificently, teasing its old psychological record of $50 an ounce. Realistically, it took some time for silver to crescendo amid increased demand arisen from The End Of The Monetary System As We Know It (TEOTMSAWKI).”

Dictator's Pet Entertainers are Above the Law

Jeff Berwick on the hypocrisy of our relations with Cuba.

“Americans are forbidden from visiting Cuba or buying any Cuban goods as a relic from Cold War grandstanding. I often laugh when I see American subjects in Mexico howl with glee that they can buy a real Cuban cigar. With the Cold War over for all intents and purposes (not that it ever really existed), Washington has just lumped Cuba in with other states that sponsor terrorism…even though there really is no evidence that Cuba sponsors any such thing… nor acknowledgement that the US government attacks on Iraq, Afghanistan and numerous others were heinous terrorist attacks.”

Profiting from The End Of The Monetary System As We Know It

Jeff Berwick on the opportunity that is Japan short debt.

"While most people will lose their shirts as The End Of The Monetary System As We Know It (TEOTMSAWKI) continues down its predictable path there are some who will make fortunes.

At The Dollar Vigilante we’ve already been ahead of the curve on many profitable ventures related to TEOTMSAWKI. TDV Senior Editor, Ed Bugos, has been a proponent of owning gold since 2000 when it was at $200 and upon TDV’s founding in 2010 we immediately added gold as the largest part of our portfolio while it was trading near $1,200 and quickly saw that rise to nearly $2,000.

We’ve also been covering Bitcoin as an emerging currency and possibly a currency of the future during and after TEOTMSAWKI. We first began suggesting people get into Bitcoin on May 24, 2011 (“This Non-Fiat Currency Is Up Over 1000% in the Last Month”) when it was at $6. Today it trades for well over $200."
