Where The Hell Are My Evacuated Tubes?
These past few weeks I have been doing a lot more traveling than I'm used to which has allowed me the opportunity to get even more pissed at the life-killing inefficiencies the state.
Why are we still taking the slow rides along the roads in buses? Why are we still cramming ourselves into fuel-laden missiles and fighting air resistance and shattering the quiet of neighborhoods for miles around with the takeoffs and and landings?
I've already written about this at length, but all this travel by plane and bus has given new vigor to my consideration of the topic and my boiling frustratiion with the system. The world currently possesses the technology to provide travel that's ten times as fast as commercial air travel at a fraction of the cost.
Friction slows travel to a crawl — road friction in the case of ground travel and air friction in the case of the much faster but still relatively slow air travel. So when I'm sitting trapped in a bus for nearly two hours just to travel between cities a mere hundred miles apart…or when I'm stuck in a plane for four hours just to go a thousand miles…my mind can't help but do the math. If the free market were allowed to operate, I'd be riding in comfort and with a lot more money in my pocket and a lot less of my life wasted. I'd travel so much more because travel would be so cheap and wouldn't be so time-consuming.
Instead, now when I travel I get way too much time to consider how much of my life and money are stolen because of the progress the state prevents. I get too much time to mull over the unseen, while the world of sheep says a prayer of thanks for their governments stealing their money to lock them into stone age travel.
I would change the title of this little column to "Notes from the Evacuated Tube", but it just doesn't have the same ring. But just know, that evacuated tubes are where my anarchist capitalist heart dwells.

Before we get to the review let’s have a look at what you missed in this week's TDV Homegrown.
Gary Gibson wrote about the sad death of the Silk Road. Justin O’Connell added to Gary’s piece, and argued that the black market for online drugs is far from dead.
Next, Amanda Hooper contributed two pieces, one on the incredibly important but often overlooked oral hygiene, and the second found Amanda continuing her series on healing frequencies.
As he does in all of our subscriber publications, Jeff Berwick rounded up absurdities of statism from around the globe. And finally, Dear Slavey, TDV’s resident advice columnist, prepared us for the collapse of the government.

No Data is Good Data: A Busy Week for Number Crunching Economists
Justin O’Connell on the “roller coaster of economic data” that hit the US last week.
“The US is in acute crisis.
Since 2008-2009 the US has sat back and for the most part watched European economic struggles. Now, the whole world watches as the US caves in.
And it doesn't begin and end with the debt crises and shutdowns of the past weeks. The US braces only now for a roller coaster of economic data to be unleashed onto the market this week and in the following weeks.
In such strained economic climates for the US, like the old adage 'no news is good news,' no data is good data.
But, Bloomberg's Chief Economist, Michael McDonough, tweeted a few days ago that we could soon get the “the mother of all data release days.”
That's not what I would want if I had any ties to the US. Especially after the October the US has had.”

Meet the New Boss, Same as the Old Boss
Redmond Weissenberger on new Fed chairperson, Janet Yellen.
“The idea that anyone would be chosen who feels differently on the efficacy of central banking is laughable. Yellen is a proud member of the university-industrial complex that just so happens to have its members in higher echelons of power. The mindset of these government-supported academics is the same across the board: the state is a necessary part of life and the free market is in dire need of bureaucratic regulation. Ben Bernanke will be leaving the Fed thinking he saved the global economy from collapse with his faithful money printer. When Yellen takes the reins, she will be inheriting an economy desperately addicted to easy money and credit. If she thinks that her smarts alone can find a pain-free way out of the mess Bernanke created, she has all the hubris Hayek was referring to when he talked about the fatal conceit.”

TDV’s resident advice columnist on how to prepare for a government collapse.
"TDV has questioned it for years, but now the general public is starting to get a taste of what happens when our government starts to collapse and pulls the economy down with it and pushes the country over the edge into chaos. It’s amazing how much of the US economy depends on the government to fund it. Eight-hundred thousand workers are off the job and the domino effects are fanning out over all the feeder companies that do stuff for the government or depend on government funds to operate. If the US defaults on its debt, the dollar will collapse faster than you can smash a Coke can with a hammer and it will become very very tough for middle class people to continue on as they have.”
