In a civilization as inherently violent as ours, everything has the potential to be weaponized. If something has yet to have been weaponized in the mainstream culture, rest assured – experiments into doing so have surely been conducted.
And that includes lights. Strobe lights, for instance, are well understood as inducing disorientation and other effects. This has just been taken one step further.
Scientists have recently developed an "off-switch" for the brain. Their aim? Simple. To effectively shut down neural activity using light pulses.
Stanford scientist Karl Deisseroth discovered in 2015 how to switch individual brain cells on and off using light in a technique he called "optogenetics."
“It creates a powerful tool that allows neuroscientists to apply a brake in any specific circuit with millisecond precision, beyond the power of any existing technology,” said one scientist.
According to Independent UK, "this technique…could allow problematic parts of the brain to be switched off with light and tackled with minimal intrusion."
No word on what is exactly meant by "problematic." Too many questions? Well, forget the aderall. Let's just go straight to the "off-switch."
Well-meaning people might think this is a great development. For the first time, we could target and turn "off" those brain cells responsible for rape, murder and so on, they might believe. But, since war and violence generally benefits those who fund the "re"-search into such technologies, this would never be applied towards that.
What's next? Everyone with an implanted microchip? That's what NBC predicted:
