TDV Week in Review October 28th, 2012

An infrequent visitor to the US might get the impression that the nation is a police state on lockdown where one is more likely to get detained or shot by the police than one is to have a good time. And that's largely true. At least on the surface…

As you might expect, people find ways to enjoy themselves despite state prohibitions and a violence-ready cadre of state enforcers. The fun goes underground. If you know where to look, there are all sorts of seamy good times to be had. Just because you can't do it at the bar or the club or in the middle of the street doesn't mean it isn't going on –with enthusiasm!– in hotels and living rooms.

You have: gambling in basements, prostitutes for dining in or take out and many of whom hate condoms as much as any self-respecting man should, marijuana parties, cocaine parties, crack smoke shotgunning parties, voyeuristic cuckolding, gangbangs, interracial gangbangs, interracial cuckolding gangbangs, cockfights (both poultry and phallic), and people who regularly have sex with their eager pets and record it.

In short, the underground economy in voluntary human interaction for pleasure is alive and strong. Sure, it's a shame that it has to go underground at all, but I for one am glad it's there despite the oppressive, puritanical police state from which it must hide. One could argue credibly that the repression multiplies the perversion…and makes it more fun! Lord knows I enjoy pleasurable consenting activity even more if someone has forbidden me to engage in it. People who are denied basic freedoms and pleasure will tend toward excess when they get a chance to cut loose (looking directly at you, Catholic school girls).

Enjoying the underground pleasure economy takes a little research, especially if you're just visiting the US and aren't already plugged into the local network. So thank heaven for the Internet! The Internet makes life tolerable in the National Socialist anti-pleasure US. You can find your illicit pleasure and your kink with a little patience and a little looking. When I was reading about Jeff's misfortunes and frustrations in yesterday's Weekend Vigilante, I couldn't help but chuckle to myself and think about how I feverishly scan the Internet for potential fun as soon as I know I'll be traveling back to the States. I always enter the States prepared.

Under the soft, gentle glow of alcohol, I often regale my fellow TDVers here in Acapulco with tales of my Internet-enabled misadventures. I won't disturb or frighten you with any of those details here, good reader. I just want to stress that there's all kinds of fun to be had with other consenting human beings in the USSA, even though you're not allowed to indulge in buying sex or using drugs –including alcohol— in the streets.

P.S. Hmmm…now that I think about it, perhaps this topic is worthy of more official investigation and actionable advice in TDV's newest newsletter Homegrown…which exists to help you vigilantes permanently stuck in the USSA not only survive but also thrive and still enjoy your lives.  Sadly, enjoying yourself in the USSA often means having to do things in hiding and with an eye out for covering your tracks.

The election is just around the corner, and I have to say one must admire the “candidates” new campaign platforms of out-and-out lies. In the past, we were subjected to mistruths, white lies, and spin, and now the two parties just flat out make stuff up. It’s a good thing you drop by TDV, for the sobering reality of truth.

In case you missed it, this is how the week went on TDV…

Unions — Another Form of Collectivism Gone Awry

Jeff Berwick takes an informed and unique view on the NHL labour strife, and the inherent flaw of unions.

“In the end, unions are about gangsterism and price-fixing.  Unions get the state to help force workers into the union collective by making it a condition of employment and thus give up their individual ability to contract with the employer.  Unions then get the state to interfere with negotiations between the mob of employees and the employers.  The employers lose the right to fire outright the mob of unruly workers when they throw tantrums and refuse to work.  Striking workers can refuse to work as they parade around in picket lines…then expect the employers to take them back with their deliberately unreasonable demands met at least halfway.”

Do Not Tolerate Domestic Violence

TDV contributor, and renowned individualist anarchist and individualist feminist Wendy McElroy, contrasts domestic violence and state control.

“I know how you feel. I was once in such an abusive domestic relationship that I am now legally blind in one eye from a fist in the face. After I managed enough self-respect to leave, one question haunted me: Why did I stay? Why would an otherwise independent woman allow herself to be literally beaten up when there were options?

"The reasons are similar to why people stay in America. He expressed regret and swore he would 'make it up' to me; I wanted to believe him because the love of a person diminishes slowly. He vowed to change; I hoped we could go back to before he exerted soul-crushing control of who I was and what I could do. I was frightened to be without him because I believed both his attacks on my self-worth and the pumped-up version of his own value. Besides which, leaving meant severing ties with close friends who would be called upon to take sides.”

So, How Can I Make a Living in Mexico

Jim Karger with some boots-on-the-ground advice for ambitious and entrepreneurial expats and prospective expats.

“Just know that starting and becoming successful in a business here in Mexico or anywhere for that matter requires skill, preparation, market analysis, and hard work. All businesses require, or at least are best-served in Mexico with bilingual owners. So, if you don't speak Spanish, don't wait until you get to Mexico. Find courses you can take now. And, it goes without saying, but I will say it anyway, businesses require money to open, oftentimes as much as a similar business in the US and Canada. Don't come down on a shoestring and believe you can crank up a successful business. It doesn't work that way. If you want to work in Mexico as an employee, determine what you can add.”

How Many Bubbles in a Bar of Soap?

Jeff Berwick warns US citizens of the new passport policies which serve to enslave the residents of the USSA even further.

“These are the same tactics that US states in the South used to use to keep blacks from voting during the Civil Rights Movement. The whites at the polling booths would ask blacks impossible-to-answer questions like 'How many seeds in a watermelon?' or 'How many bubbles in a bar of soap?' in order to deny them voting privileges. Interesting how the federal government treats its subjects like blacks in the Old South.

"And note that Soviet Russia used bureaucracy to similar effect to delay or deny passports to its subjects. Applications would get 'lost' or linger in the system for years. What's happening now is the same 'soft totalitarianism' that doesn't outright deny freedom of movement, but just makes getting outside the border much more difficult to the point of impossibility."
