Here’s what we wrote about during our abbreviated Christmas week…
MONDAY, December 23
100 Years of the Federal Reserve
Jeff Berwick on 100 years of Fed and the blaringly obvious.
“Today the Federal Reserve System will celebrate its centennial. 100 years ago today, in the waning moments before the Christmas recess, Congress passed (along partisan lines), the Federal Reserve Act. Some called it a perfect Christmas present. Still, many knew that the Fed was anything but an "economic Fourth of July" for the US, as magnate Paul Warburg called it.
The role of the Federal Reserve has changed over the years. Originally an arm of the Treasury Department, the Fed has transformed into a mysterious, independent institution which sets monetary policy at the behest of the banking establishment in collusion with the government.”
THURSDAY, December 26
Jeff Berwick on Christmas, from a TDV point of view. This is not your typical anarchist take on Christmas. Whereas most rally against the fairy tales and commercialization of religious frippery, Berwick likes to sit back, take a deep breath and share some perspective. Don't the automatons of the world deserve a break also?
"I used to love Christmas when I was very young. I don't know many young kids that don't including my own. Then, once in my teens I began to hate Christmas.
I hated Christmas mostly because there was never anything to do on it. Before the internet there wasn't anything on television except Christmas programming and everything – including the bars – were closed. And forget about getting much work done… No one is around. But, now that I have 2 kids and in Mexico Christmas is more of a party with family and friends than anything, I've come to again enjoy Christmas. It's always nice to have a moment to pause for reflection.”
