Welcome to Sunday, a time to review what we wrote about at TDV this week! But before that, let’s take a look at what was in our subscriber-only publication, TDV’s Dispatch.
First up in my “Memory Hole”, well, more Fed and Yellen. Sigh. Next, Jeff Berwick got into bitcoin for your place of business. The time is now to join the revolution we’ve been telling you about. Then, Ed Bugos had a look at the markets and his outlook.
Next, Jeff took us around the world of the absurd in his weekly “Other News from TEOTMSAWKI and TDV Related Tidbits”. Finally, we profiled Tommy Chong!

Here’s what we wrote about this week…

Why You Should Absolutely Never Sell Your Gold Jewelry and Buy Much More
Jeff Berwick argues against selling your gold.
“Physical gold investors hear it all of the time: there is not only intrinsic value in gold, but also intrinsic disadvantages.
These disadvantages are no doubt why bitcoin has had such success internationally.
The most noted of these problems is the simple fact that gold is not easily transportable. Not only does physical gold (and even more so silver) come with actual physical weight, but it also comes with a whole host of worldwide regulation when it comes from moving gold from one slave-ship (read: nation-state) to another.”

The Scoop Behind TDV's First Ever Urgent Crisis Conference
Jeff Berwick explains the need for TDV’s upcoming Crisis Conference in Panama.
“As you may know, and as I said recently, ‘2014 May Be The Last Year To Salvage Your Assets’. And yes, I believe that. Especially if you are an American with most of your assets still inside the US. I went on to give the ‘Top 5 Reasons Why You Should Get Outside of the Western Financial System Now’. All of the top 5 reasons were actually taken verbatim from governmental actions and warnings actually stating that they will be making it much harder to internationalize your assets and actually absconding with pension funds and seizing funds from bank accounts in the US and the western world… and soon.”

Even Billionaires Don't Know How to Legally Internationalize Assets
Berwick on the universal challenges of internationalizing assets.
"In the old days (pre 9/11) it used to be quite easy for people with money to ship their funds offshore to a jurisdiction like Switzerland to get some assets outside of the US and keep it away from the prying eyes of the US government, IRS, NSA and countless other three-letter agencies and away from frivolous lawsuits in the US which are rampant.
Those days have long passed. There are now more sophisticated, totally legal ways of doing the same but we never cease to be amazed how few people know about it.”
THURSDAY, January 16
Don't Like My Article? I Will Sue!
Wendy McElroy on the USSA’s addiction to the litigious.
"Does everyone in America have a lawyer on speed dial?
McDonald's is being sued again by a California woman who claims she was scalded by their hot coffee. In 1990, a New Mexico woman was awarded $2.9 million in a hot-coffee lawsuit against McDonald's; the award was later reduced to about $500,000. Meanwhile, a continent away, a New Jersey woman is suing a real estate developer for not disclosing the presence of a 'bad' neighbor when she purchased a house.”

Capital Controls Ratcheting Up Worldwide
Jeff with more on the challenges of keeping your money.
“We have been inundated all week with interest in our "Crisis Conference" in Panama next month. The amount of interest has surprised even myself but the really surprising parts are all the stories we are hearing from those who want to attend.
Countless people have been telling us of how they are unable to transfer their capital out of their own countries and they have been contacting us to see if we can help and if the information we will be divulging at the conference can help them internationalize their assets. The short answer, in almost every case, has been yes.”

Spontaneity, Self Defence, and More: The Weekend Vigilante January 18, 2014
Jeff Berwick en route to Vancouver with his weekly address to TDVers…
“Well, I am writing this en route to Vancouver from Acapulco, with stops in Mexico City and Phoenix and by the time it gets sent out that is about as certain as I can be about my exact location! If I had to hazard a guess, I am probably in a backroom at the Phoenix or Vancouver airport being quizzed about my intentions.
In any case, if I survive getting through two customs areas of two different countries, I pondered today about the spontaneity of my life. I've told you before how I don't like to book any sort of flights or itinerary much more than a few days before the actual date and again I did that. Things change too fast and too many opportunities are missed if you lock yourself into pre-ordained arrangements much further in advance than that. And, again, this has proven to be true for me.
I am scheduled to speak tomorrow (Sunday) in Vancouver at the Vancouver Resource Investment Conference and only advised the conference of the flights I desired a few days ago. And, that's because I was waiting to hear from the Wired writer who will be shadowing me for the next few days – and who we had a great night in Acapulco last night – doing a potential cover-story expose on my way of life and involvement in bitcoin and other ventures. He finally confirmed he'd be coming to Acapulco just a few days ago so I was waiting on that… and also cancelled my Honduras and Guatemala trip for the same reason.”

Despite daily intelligence briefings, Barack Obama appears in the dark about NSA surveillance. Speaking to his citizens as if they were children, and citing 9/11 as a reason for ubiquitous surveillance (the oldest trick in the book?), Obama explained to us this past week that we had nothing to worry about. He was proud that Amerikans had taken an interest in their civil liberties. But, nothing would be changing. And that we should trust him.
Since the massive leak of documents by Edward Snowden fell on deaf ears in the Oval Office, I've put together a quick list of Hollywood films that perhaps Barack could watch to be schooled on what many Amerikans think about the NSA, and indeed have thought for more than two decades.
In the 1992 film Sneakers, the NSA is featured throughout. In the film, the NSA shrugs off allegations of domestic wiretapping. It’s not them, one of their agents insist.
Robert Redford asks: “you’re the guys I hear breathing on the other end of my phone.”
The NSA agent replies: “No that’s the FBI, we’re not chartered for domestic surveillance.”
Redman: "I see. You just overthrow governments. Setup friendly dictators.”
NSA: “No…that’s the CIA. We protect our governments communications. We try to break the other fella’s codes. We’re the good guys, Marty.”
View clips of that film here.
The 1997 movie Good Will Hunting features a classic scene in which Matt Damon's character, Will Hunting, answers the question, “Why shouldn’t you work for the NSA?”
View that well-known clip here.
The 1998 movie Enemy of the State was based around NSA corruption and surveillance.
Gene Hackman: “The government’s been in bed with the entire telecommunications industry since the 40s. They’ve infected everything. They can get into your bank statements, computer files, emails, listen to your phone calls.”
Will Smith: “My wife’s been saying that for years.”
Gene: “Every wire, every airwave. The more technology you use, the easier it is for them to be keep tabs on you. It’s a brave new world out there, or at least it better be.” Gene Hackman tells Will Smith’s character that “the NSA conducts worldwide surveillance.”
View clips from Enemy Of The State here and here,
In this clip from The Simpsons movie, Lisa warns Marge and Bart that they should keep it down, since they are fugitives on the run to Seattle. Marge says, “It’s not like the government is listening to everyone’s conversation.” The scene then cuts to a massive NSA data center, with the implication that, in fact, everyone is being spied upon.
And if that list isn't enough to convince Barack Obama that his obfuscatory speech was transparent (pun-intended), here is a running list of just what the NSA can do.
