When Mark Dice's YouTube channel suddenly disappeared over the weekend, including all 55 million of its views and 265,000 subscribers, attention on the internet was quickly drawn to the fact that around 200 people and organizations, one of which is a British police unit, have been given the authority by Google to "flag" up to 20 YouTube videos at a time. They are the "super flaggers."
The Financial Times first reported that the UK Metropolitan's Police's Counter Terrorism Internet Referral Unit has been using the "super flagger" powers it was given to ultimately ban videos it views as extremist.
A person close to the program said most of the 200 participants in the super flagger program are people who spend a lot of time flagging videos that may violate YouTube's community guidelines, known in the real world as "narcs" or "tattle-tales." Of the approximately 200 participants in the program, less than 10 are government agencies or non-government organizations.
Google ultimately decides which videos are removed from YouTube, which means that, in light of Mark Dice's entire channel, we can be sure Google are no friends to the freedom movement.
90% of the time these individuals report a video, the video is removed.
But, should one be surprised over the recent censorship at Google? No. As successful YouTube personality Julia Tourianski stated, "I live in constant fear on youtube." She is not the only one, as Mark Dice and Alex Jones have both protested censorship they've encountered at Google/YouTube. These figures have multiple YouTube accounts to protect themselves from the vector of censorship.
Ironically, while in China, first Lady Michelle Obama said, “It is so important for information and ideas to flow freely over the Internet and through the media…Because that’s how we discover the truth, that’s how we learn what’s really happening in our communities, in our country and our world.”
Since the debacle lit up the internet, Mark Dice's YouTube channel has been restored. But, don't mistake that with our right to free speech.
Each year demands to remove content from Google, by the US government, increase dramatically. By far, the US leads the world in requests for censorship, according to Google.
The funny thing is, the super flaggers and YouTube ultimately did Mark Dice and the freedom movement a favor because…as they say…any press is good press!
