Taking drugs might make you a better athlete. Nope, not "performance enhancing" drugs like steroids. Just some good ole' weed n' LSD…You know, those other "performance enhancing" drugs…
What do LSD, marijuana and at least one Major League Baseball team – the San Diego Padres – have in common? When taken together it can result in Major League history…
On June 12, 1970, Houston Astros pitcher Dock Ellis pitched a no-hit game for the Pittsburgh Pirates for a 2-0 victory over the San Diego Padres at San Diego Stadium. In 1984, Ellis revealed he had pitched the game while under the influence of LSD.
Ellis disclosed the tidbit about his historical achievement in a newspaper story.
"I was really out to lunch that night," Ellis said by telephone recently. "Sometimes I saw the catcher (Jerry May), sometimes I saw the hitter, sometimes I didn't see either one. I would either see the glove or the catcher, but I really didn't know what was going on. I couldn't judge the velocity of my pitches.
"It wasn't anything I did on purpose. I missed a couple of days, and I lost a whole day, being under the influence. I didn't have to pitch. I could have said I was sick. But when I got to the ballpark, everything seemed just natural."
Ellis pitched the no-hitter against the San Diego Padres in the first game of a doubleheader, played on a rare rainy night for the Southern California city before a crowd of 9,903. The Padres won the second game 5-2.
"It was party time in my hotel room," said Ellis.
That night Ellis walked eight Padres, beaned one batsmen and struck out six. Usually he had excellent control.
Al Oliver, first basemen that night, confirms his teammates suspected nothing.
"Dock was always the same and always had the same look," Oliver said from Columbus, Ohio, where he owns Al Oliver Enterprises. "He was a great competitor, and I personally didn't see anything different in that game from the past.
"When I heard about it, my initial reaction was that only Dock could have done it. I wasn't shocked about it, although I was surprised it was LSD. I'm not that familiar with how LSD affects a person, but I understand that you have trouble standing up, let alone pitching a ballgame.
"Dock had the talent to get away with it, although not necessarily on a consistent basis."
Nate Colbert, the Padres' power-hitting first basemen of the era said that Ellis' secret was unknown to the Padres.
"Dock has always been a real live, active personality," Colbert said. "He acted the same in that game as he always did, and he had great stuff."
The Abuse Continues
Dock Ellis isn't the only pitcher to throw a no-hitter that taking drugs did not preclude. Tim Lincecum is the other one. The other one that is known, at least. In June 2013 Lincecum threw a no-hitter against the Padres at Petco Park. He did the same June 25, 2014 against the San Diego ballclub.
Lincecum smokes marijuana, at least occasionally. This is no surprise as 100 million Americans have smoked marijuana. Evidence for this was made obvious in 2009 when he was cited for having marijuana in his center console. He was upfront with police and handed over about thumb's length worth of marijuana and a glass pipe to police. Lincecum filed a not-guilty plea.
Lincecum was rated the most famous pothead in Major League Baseball by COED Magazine. Infamous "Let Timmy Smoke" shirts have even popped up around San Francisco. (If you think about it, it's unfortunate that a speeding stop can result in Tim Lincecum becoming MLB's poster boy for weed. Regardless, the information is a yawn. In the 1980s in MLB baseball broadcaters announced games drunk like Harry Caray. When Pete Rose broke the Ty Cobb's all-time hits record, the broadcasters (one of which is a hall of fame second baseman) were openly drinking.)
What's Known…
What is known is that apparently taking LSD or smoking marijuana won't detract from your ability to achieve some of the highest achievements in major league sports….at least against the Padres.
Both Dock Ellis and Tim Lincecum have been All-Stars and won World Series championships (Lincecum two times), so maybe it truly is time for the US to rethink its drug policy…including its stance on LSD… The marijuana market has taken off, and The Dollar Vigilante (TDV) is covering it in stride bringing subscribers opportunities in the industry.
Currently MLB does not test players for LSD nor marijuana use as both drugs are not considered "performance enhancing." They might need to re-consider this. Thankfully because humanity is on the edge of collective enlightenment, the general public might see this for what it truly is: proof that some drugs aren't that bad for you, and might even be healthy. Oh – and also that perhaps the jails should not be packed full of people for using drugs, like humans always have. Even some primates take hallucinogens.

AB 2201 is entitled ‘Selective Service and Drivers License for Vehicles.’ Almost every male between 18 and 26 years old who applies for a driver's license or for a renewal at the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) would be automatically registered with the federal Selective Service System (SSS).
If the applicant were 16 years old, then his information would be automatically forwarded to the Selective Service upon his 18th birthday. Females are excluded.”
