Midnight Underground Train to Chile

My god, am I exhausted. It's been a hectic couple of weeks here for your editor, vigilantes. I've been trying to divest myself of all my extraneous possessions and obligations here in Amerika as I get ready to board the New Underground Railroad to Santiago, Chile. You might have noticed a slight lag in the publishing schedule this week as this was also when other duties called away our managing editor, Redmond Weissenberger, too. But now we're getting back on track, catching up on sleep…and I'm just a couple weeks away from getting the hell out of Dodge and trodding the sweet earth in Galt's Gulch.

And not a moment too soon! Aside from the Amerikan police state now firmly in place and the continuing economic collapse, my side career as a Caribbean gigolo just hasn't been working out that well. There are a few angry Minnesotan women who have hinted strongly that my continued good health is contingent on my getting out of town. And my tendency to scoff at the state's absurd prohibitions as quietly as possible is bound to catch up with me eventually, since the police will no doubt start acting on the intel provided by the total surveillance mechanisms so deeply in place.

I won't kid you. Shutting everything down stateside is stressful. But it is also immensely satisfying. I'm taking some considerable financial hits because I'm terminating a handful of agreements early. But the potential upside is big enough for those losses not to cost me too much sleep. As long-suffering readers know, I've been torn about leaving the US and its creamy Midwestern girls. Leaving may seem like a no-brainer when the goddamned government is reading every single email, but I'm a creature of comfort and familiarity. But even I know it's time to take a break, time to pack up like a Munich Jew in 1934 and take a long and likely permanent vacation away from my continent of origin.

I will be working on the Underground Railroad from the freer end. “Civil disobedience is not the first, but the last option. Henry David Thoreau wrote with profound restraint in Civil Disobedience: ‘If the injustice is part of the necessary friction of the machine of government, let it go, let it go: perchance it will wear smooth certainly the machine will wear out. If the injustice has a spring, or a pulley, or a rope, or a crank, exclusively for itself, then perhaps you may consider whether the remedy will not be worse than the evil; but if it is of such a nature that it requires you to be the agent of injustice to another, then, I say, break the law. Let your life be a counter friction to stop the machine.’”

Bradley Manning Avoids Most Serious Charge, Still Facing Lifetime With His Kidnappers

"Yesterday, Private Bradley Manning was charged and faces "up to" 136 years in a cage for being someone Thomas Jefferson would consider a patriot. Considering the world's oldest person died at 116 years old last month it is quite clearly a life sentence. For myself, at 42, I consider anything more than 10 years a life sentence. Not that I couldn't still have fun at 52… but a lot less fun with a lot more viagra.”
